ABOUT ME

I am a bilingual, Spanish-speaking licensed clinical therapist with a PhD in Social Work and as well as an M.S.W. and an M.A. in Women and Gender Studies from Loyola University Chicago, where I also teach as an adjunct professor. I have over eleven years of clinical experience working with individuals, couples and groups. I have extensive advanced training in trauma, particularly gender-based violence and the impact of trauma on immigrants and refugees.

Therapy is an amazing tool where collaboration with an experienced therapist can assist you to become the best version of yourself. As a strengths-based feminist therapist, I focus on the talents and strengths my clients bring with them into session. Often, when you are struggling with your mental health or other obstacles such as life transitions, it becomes difficult to see your own strengths. However, a non-judgmental, empathic, relational approach to therapy allows for you to grow in a safe space. Together, we will develop this space, as well as a mutually respectful relationship. Through culturally competent and trauma-informed therapy techniques, I strive to recognize people’s intersecting identities and enduring strengths.

THERAPEUTIC FOCUS & APPROACH TO CARE

I specialize in the treatment of Perinatal Mood Disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. For eight years, I worked at a community-based clinic specializing in the treatment of such disorders- the only specifically focused maternal mental health clinic in the Midwest at the time. I have experience working with women and their families, as well as facilitating groups for pregnant women, couples, and grieving mothers. I also received advanced training in trauma and recovery, including gender-based trauma and immigration issues. I work with these populations to provide culturally sensitive treatment and support. I use a variety of evidence-based and clinical approaches, as well as yoga, self-care, psycho-education, and trauma-informed therapy.

As a trauma-informed women’s therapist, I recognize the widespread impact that traumatic events may have on an individual’s physical and mental health and well-being as well as the behavioral and emotional responses of survivors. I strive to assist clients in recognizing their triggers and developing healthy coping mechanisms, learning techniques for setting boundaries, and developing healthy relationships. I focus on gender issues, traumatic experiences, immigration, and refugee issues.

Gender issues include women’s mental health, sex therapy, and LGBTQIA issues, including perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, problems with self-image and low self-esteem, and gender-based violence such as domestic violence and sexual violence. I also work with LGBTQIA issues including coming out, navigating family and personal relationships, and identity issues. Discrimination in the form of sexism, racism, homophobia/transphobia, etc. causes real-life stress that impacts one’s mental health.

I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to see how I can help you. Therapy is available in Spanish; please inquire about these options during your consultation.
